OpenVBE is designed to be cross-platform and it should work with Windows 7. Here are a few things that I would try:

1. Update your graphics driver. OpenVBE uses OpenGL for rendering image (versus DirectX). Updating your graphics driver should also update the necessary OpenGL support for this sim.

2. Update your .Net framework. OpenVBE lists .Net assemblies as being used for AI. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=22 to download and install version 3.5 with Service Pack 1.

Hopefully with those two steps your problem has been solved. The following is 'last ditch effort' steps:

3. Use compatibility mode. Right click the application, select 'properties' and click the 'compatibility' tab. Check 'Run program in compatibility mode', select Windows XP.

4. Run XP … On a virtual machine. If all else fails then it might be best to just run it on a platform that you know for sure works: XP. Grab VirtualBox from https://www.virtualbox.org/ and set up Windows XP on it, then install OpenVBE there.

This can happen if you upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 and you transferred your user account settings from the old operating system to the new operating system. This can happen if the application is not compatible with the new platform. To fix the problem, uninstall the current version and install the version compatible with Windows 7.

Unfortunately, after checking the latest version, I don’t see any problem running it on Windows 7. openBVE supports Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. For users with Windows 8 who wish to play openBVE, run the game as administrator. Anyway, just download the latest stable release of openBVE and install it. This should fix the problem.
