We daily use different electronic and mechanical appliances at home, office, organizations, etc. Not only one, but we also need several machines working together. They all need electrical power to run. For that, of course, we use switches to connect to the electricity. If there are many devices to run at a time, we may use switching chip technologies.
A core technology using custom ASICs designed in-house which is being traditionally used in many organizations which help in the manufacturing of the network equipment which is called the switch chipset. This is always given the priority among the other technologies. As companies always want to compete with each other, it is the best option to be on the top of the race. It is the one that makes you unique and differentiates from the other companies. It had many critical components and used for a product’s long-term capabilities.
These switch chipsets provide functionalities such as innovative architectures, reliability, the interfaces with very high speed. But the cost to design these switch chipsets is extremely high due to its enhanced functionalities. But most of the companies want to complete the development part in low cost, and they are forced to increase development margins and reduce costs. To deal with this issue, switch chipsets by third party vendors are introduced by both the start-ups and the well-established organizations.
The performance of these chipsets is high than the other leading technologies in the market and is of low cost when compared to the traditional chipsets. They stand as the competition with the solutions of the in-house architectures. There are a much different architecture of packet switches available in the market, where each of them provides different technologies, functions according to the purpose needed. They have created many choices for the customers to choose for their requirement in the market.
There are differences among those switches such as in typical and traditional switch architectures. These provide the most wanted and needed functions such as carrier-class reliability and the delivery of quality of service (QOS) to the network. These packet switches are arranged according to their performances provided, and they charge according to their functionalities and properties. There are many of such kinds with speed 640 Gigabits per seconds and 160 gigabits per sec, etc. There are much more going to be introduced soon.
Noted differences in packet switching chips:
As we have already discussed there are differences in properties, purposes, functions provided by each packet switching chips. They differ in product specifications such as the number of subnets provided per chip, the size and the number of the Fast Ethernet or Ethernet ports, and available control schemes of transmission. Some of these products use different algorithms such as weighted round robin, dynamic priority, or strict priority.
Different features of packet switching chips include enhanced quality of service, buffer management, L3 routing, port trunking, port trunking, IP multi casting, port mirroring, protocol filtering standards for packet prioritization. For proper controlling of the network services, QOS is critically important.
