By itself, you cannot lock or password-protect a TIFF file but there are other options that will allow you to protect the files you have not only TIFF files. If you have a bunch of TIFF files, you can put them in a folder and compress that folder then add a password to the resulting file to protect its contents. It’s the same as password-protecting your TIFF files.

Go to 7-Zip File Archiver and download the latest. It supports Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8.x, and Windows 10. 7-Zip supports archive files created by WinZip and WinRAR. 7-Zip is an open source file compressor similar to WinZip and WinRAR but the advantage is it is free unlike WinZip and WinRAR which are offered commercially. Also, 7-Zip offers better compression than the two.

To protect your TIFF files, gather all your sensitive TIFF files in one empty folder. Once all files are in there, right-click that folder, point to “7-Zip,” and select “Add to archive.”

On the next screen, make sure “7z” is selected in “Archive format.” Set the compression parameters. You can click “Help” to learn more about the best compression settings. In “Encryption” section, enter the password twice. You can also check “Encrypt file names” to also encrypt the names of the files. Click “OK” when you are finished to start compressing.

When it is finished, you may now delete the folder you compressed. All your sensitive TIFF files are now contained in the resulting 7z file protected by a password.
