Watch videos from an external harddrive on Sharp Aquos LC-19k5

Hello,

I have an external hard drive that has a lot of movies and music. I would like to watch them on my TV by plugging in the drive. When I do this the drive is recognized but I can see most of the videos. Those that I can see, I can't play them. There is an option to format it but then I will only be able to put recorded from the TV and nothing else. How can I watch my videos on the TV as well as save the recorded shows?
