Western Digital My Book formatting

I bought a 1TB Western Digital My Book External Hard Drive. I need to format it to become a Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but I am having a problem in doing this. I keep receiving the same error message, "file system verify or repair failed". I found out that it can only format to FAT32, but I need Uni for it to be a Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

I tried to repair the disk and verified the option but I got the same error. I even tried formatting it with 0's (takes hours), but it failed after 7 hours. Can anyone help me format this thing?

Dear Kobebryant,

Let me tell you first what you are actually using. My Book is a series from western digital.

It's a hard drive series which is designed to look as a standard real black/silver/white paper book shape.

Lots of people also face the same difficulties with regards to the formatting of this product. "Format failed…." message pops out whenever the system fails to format the drive. You may be able to resolve this problem by simply following the steps given below:

  • First, you will have to select your drive and after doing that, open the disk utility folder.
  • Select the drive (MY BOOK).
  • Now, click the partition tab and give a new name to the drive (Ex: your own name).
  • Then, choose one partition in a selected drive.
  • Now, select the partition, go to the options (bottom of the dialog window), select GUID partition table.
  • Then, select apply.

After completing these steps, I'm sure you will not face anymore difficulties regarding the formatting of the drive.
