Hi there,

PSD – its a Photoshop file format which can store layers, masks, alpha channels, and other effects before deciding on what the final output will be. This make it easy for you to edit your files if needed, without having to start from scratch.

JPEG – is one of the major file formats used, it is mostly compressed images. And supports from 8 bit to 24 bit colors. Its one of the most common images you see on websites because it usually has a small file size while retaining the picture quality.

GIF – are images which uses solid color or 8 bit / 256 colors. This file format is suitable to pictures which are mostly based on shapes like the square, triangle and such. It is also the most widely used animated image file on the internet.

There are other image file formats out there which are used by the general public. Also these file formats cater to certain situations, so make sure you select the best format you will be needing when saving pictures.

Ah so each file output caters to a type of image depending on use and quality. Can't PSD files be uploaded and used instead? So I am guessing for photographs I should stay at JPEG due to the file size.

Yes it all depends on how you are going to be using the images. For photo realistic go jpeg/png. For shapes and solid colors go for GIF.
