Hi all.
As usual when the computer is powered up, the Windows XP screen pops up and then a blue screen comes up saying that msln program is not found and skip auto check and then the screen turns black. The computer is running, yet the monitor power light button goes yellow. Any ideas?

MSLN program is not found with blue screen
The msln program is actually part of Windows XP files. Its purpose is for disk checking, which is actually the cause for the skip auto check problem, as it may have been corrupted or even deleted unknowingly.
As concern for your screen turns black, and the monitor power light button turns yellow, means that you won't be able to do anything to make your computer works fine, as there is no response from the CPU to your monitor.
So one solution is try to perform System Restore to a date that your computer worked perfectly fine, from safe mode before your computer tries to load Windows XP.
This can be done by pressing F8 just after your computer loads the bios screen (Information of the hardware on the black screen).
If this can't be done, then the best thing is try to back up date as much data as you can from safe mode, and try to repair your Windows XP with the WINXP repair cd, or even format the system completely.

MSLN program is not found with blue screen
Based on my research, the error you're getting is because msln.exe is being called by the autochk line specified in the bootexecute key in the system registry. Msln is used by Symantec to delete infected/bad files before they are loaded into system memory of Windows proper and become protected by being in use. I would suggest you to try the steps mentioned below to see if that helps.
Method 1: Perform a startup repair and check if you still receive this error
Method 2: Reset the default value data for bootexecute key in the system registry.

a. Click on Start; in the start search type regedit and hit Enter.
b. Browse through the following location
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession Manager
c. Double click on Bootexecute and change the value data from “autocheck msln autocheck autochk “ to “autocheck autochk *” and save changes by clicking on Ok.
d. Now restart the computer and that should fix the problem.
e. Restart the computer and check if you receive this error.
