Hello.

Yesterday I downloaded a video file with an avi file format from the internet but Windows Media Player didn’t seem to support it. Whenever I try to open the file with Windows Media player, it shows an error that says “Windows media player cannot play this file, the player might not support this file type or might not support the CODEC that was used to compress the file. ” Is anyone here who can give a proper solution to this problem?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,

I think that the problem is with your Codex, maybe it is not compatible with MP 11. Try to reload the Codex options for MP 11.

Or download a recent build of ffdshow for Windows, it is highly optimized multi-codec decoding program.

If it does not help, then download the latest version of WMP.

Or for avi. files is better to use VLC media player.

I hope it is helpful,

Your Windows media player has missing CODEC.

To play these all avi files you have to download a CODEC.

Use K-lite CODEC to play avi files.

It also plays 3gp, mp4, flv and many other formats.

So, go to this link and download the CODEC from this site.

After installing it you will be able to play all the files that you want to play

Thanks.

If you could play avi files flawlessly before but are having issues now, here is a step-by-step guide to help you fix it.
1. First off, check Media File Player Association, it should be able to solve the problem. Open Windows Media Player. Go to Tools à Options à File Type tab. Check if the avi format is selected. If not, check the box and click OK. See if it works.
2. Another solution is a system restore. To do this, click Start à Programs à Accessories à System tools and select System Restore. You will see a list of dates you can revert your system back to, select the date before the problem started showing up. When you are done, check if the avi file can be played.
3. This problem might be a result of corrupted or missing code files. Uninstall your existing code files and reinstall it. Or download this CODEC pack: https://filehippo.com/download_klite_codec_pack/.

4. Convert the avi file to wmv file, which is officially supported by Windows Media Player.
5. The last option would be uninstalling and reinstalling Windows Media Player.

Hi,

For your media player not to work certain extensions might be because you might have not ticked the extension in the file types in your media player to do this

  1. Open your media player
  2. Go to tools — options
  3. In the window find for file types (here you find all the extensions see for the .ext file u have downloaded)
  4. If not selected . Select the .ext then apply — ok
  5. Restart the PC and try opening the file

Also the see that you have the latest version of the media player

Windows Media Player is the default player embedded with Windows. When you install windows in your computer, the media player is automatically installed with it. But the fact is it doesn’t contain all the necessary codec for playing different kind of video files. So when you get an error message with playing video files, there is a codec missing. In order to install the necessary codec:

I recommend you to use a better media player like VLC or KMP.
