Hi,

What is the way to find out whether my computer has a high-speed port?

What is the best port to connect my modem in order to get a faster connection?

Hi,

You will know which is the high speed, or whether you have a high speed port on your computer by going to Device Manager. To go to device manager, right click "my Computer" go to properties and then click on "Device Manager".

Under Device Manager, look for Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Click the plus (+) sign beside it to show you the list of USB controllers and devices connected to your computer.

If one of the listed USB controllers says "enhanced" that means that port has high-speed capability.

There are multiple options on how you can check if your computer has a high-speed port.

Option 1
I would suggest trying to connect your modem to one of the USB ports located on the back of your computer since those are usually high-speed USB ports. Then if you see a message on your screen that says "The USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a High Speed USB 2.0 port.", basically that means you've plugged it into a USB 1.1 port instead of a USB 2.0 port. Just unplug and connect your modem to other available USB ports until you get the right one that doesn't give you that prompt.

Option 2
Try to check your Device Manager if you have a high speed port or a USB 2.0 port (high-speed port).
To access Device Manager on Vista:
  • Click Start and, under All Programs in the Start Search text box,
Type: devmgmt.msc
  • If User Account Control dialog box appears, click Continue to open Device Manager.
For earlier versions of Windows(e.g. Windows XP and below)
  • Click Start, click Run, and in the Run dialog box, type: devmgmt.msc
  • Screenshots available on this link: http://www.usbman.com
Under the device manager window to try to look for "Universal Serial Bus controllers". Try to expand it by clicking "+" sign. Then look for a host controller with the word "Enhanced" on it. If you find one, then your computer has USB 2.0 capable ports and has the necessary host controller drivers.

Option 3
You can try to download third party software's that would check the speed of your USB ports.
Option 4
Connect a USB drive to a USB port on your computer and transfer a large file or group of files to it. Check on the transfer speed and compare it to the list below.
  • USB 1.1 – 12 Mbit/s (1.5MB/s)
  • USB 2.0 – 480 Mbit/s (60 MB/s)
  • USB 3.0 – 3.2 Gbit/s (400 MB/s)
