Correct in assuming a non-3G iPhone doesn't work in Japan.Need a 3G or 3GS iPhone to use there either on roam or even with a Japanese carrier (Softbank). Otherwise you just have a glorified iPod Touch.
Tri-band phone works in most countries (with the primary exceptions of Japan and South Korea).:

To whom it may concern,
Well, Yes! For Japan and Korea your mobile phone should be 3G compatible. As of now, 3G services only exist in Japan and Korea, To give you update on technology business, 3G is a high-speed service that will allow subscribers or users to download video or connect to the web. That is why Sony and Siemens have not been into their deciding point of whether they could afford to develop technology for 3G.
In another line of stories in the world of technology, stable firms are scared of adding 3G in their market, In short, they are scared of market failures. They doubt if techie people especially the masses would be grabbed 3G right away in the market. Initially, Europe had been into trial and error to market 3G.
In the lighter side, It is not mandatory to take your 4S, IPhone with you when you travel to both high-tech countries but you should be ready because if you decide not to go home early and stay to another country, Well, this is time you can access yourself to unlimited use of your gadgets without restrictions. If you're phone has defect you cannot use in particular.. The only option is? It should be unlocked and compatible with GSM 800/850/900/1800/1900.
Let's talk about tri-band. Sony Erikson's mobile phone such as T68i and T300 as well as the P800 which is familiar in the mid 2003. These are examples of not so high-tech gadgets that you might want to take them with you in Japan and Korea, it is not a guarantee that you can use them. P800 is a triband- mobile, Though, it is also supports high-speed data via GPRS but there is no way that you can use them in Japan and Korea.
