Is it possible to upgrade my USB port?

I get to read all the time about new versions of USB with amazing speeds, like the newest one (USB 3.0), with speeds in the range of GB per second. Is it possible for me to upgrade my USB, since my current one is too slow. And can i get to specify the type of USB i want when purchasing my computer?

The capability of your USB ports can not be upgraded in itself. You might be able to use an expansion USB controller though but that an additional component on the computer and not exactly an upgrade to the current USB ports that you have. You current USB ports are soldered into the motherboard and their functionality is dictated by the support the motherboard provides.

So if your USB ports only support USB 2.0, then that is the maximum capability available for you from the motherboard. An expansion card, like one that makes use of the PCI-Express, may be able to give you a USB 3.0 speed.
