You should install your video card’s driver to have the right screen resolution for your monitor.
When you connect your monitor to your CPU through the video card’s port, the system will detect the highest and lowest screen resolution that your monitor can handle including the applicable refresh rates.
Setting a wrong refresh rate for your monitor might damage it that’s why you will only see in the interface only the allowable refresh rate values. There is no right or wrong screen resolution for the monitor.
It really depends on how you see your screen. Setting your monitor to a higher resolution will make the icons on your desktop smaller and likewise, setting it to a lower screen resolution for example 800 x 600 will, of course, make the icons a lot bigger.
