Svchost using up a lot of cpu

Hi I am using windows XP sp3 on my PC.

The problem is  i noticed my pc was using up 50% processor even when idle. I opened task manager and found there are multiple copies of svchost process and one of them was using up that 50% processor.

My pc has become somewhat slow and killing the process does not work as it will start again automatically after a min or two.

What should I do?

This could be due to malware infection.

Try scanning your PC with Trojan remover or some sort of anti-malware  and see if it can find anything.

Any other idea?

If it's a malware , there's a high chance that your anti-virus won't be able to catch it. So before doing anything else, you should run a scan with applications like Trojan remover.

If you find anything do a registry cleaning as well and remember to clean your temp directory.

I did scan with Trojan remover and found nothing.

It's like they will stop at no cost! 🙁

Then this is just windows being windows!! I as so many others don't hate it for nothing!!

About the problem,

  1. Go to control panel > Administrative Tools > Services (OR go to Start > Run and type services.msc)
  2. Find the service.
  3. Right-click on it and click on Properties.
  4. Select "Disabled" from Startup type box.

Another way is firing up task manager (CTRL+ALT+DELETE) and find the process that is causing the problem, right click on it and set priority to low.

If it does not help, set priority to "idle".

Let me know if it solves the problem!!

SVCHOST are system process and it executes Dynamic Link Library files for your operating system. There four default SVCHOST running at default in your system. Most of them are network related modules. Ending some SVCHOST in your process makes your operating system restarts.

To avoid more bulk running programs or applications at start-up, remove some start-up applications. Open your run dialog box (Window + R) then type MSCONFIG on the run dialog box then press ENTER or click Ok. On the System Configuration window, click Startup then uncheck some unnecessary applications on the list especially those applications that is not familiar to you (only suspicious files).
