I have a thousands of pictures with high resolution and for that I need a shared storage of computer files. My computer is with Ubuntu and this home file server must be accessible by Linux. Other requirement is to have access to my remote files, over the network. Can you give me a suggestion?
Home file server for Linux
Hello Bart.
I hoped you would be more specific on what you had in mind. What you probably need is a Network Attached Storage or NAS. The following are several options available for a home file server:
1. Standalone NAS box.
2. Router with built-in NAS server.
3. A computer that you assembled yourself with NAS software installed.
For Option 1, you can buy NAS boxes from reputable manufacturers. Below is a photo of a NAS from Netgear:
For option 2, you can replace your current router with one that has NAS capabilities. ASUS, Buffalo, Netgear, Linksys offer routers that can function as NAS when a hard drive is attached either via USB or an internal compartment.
For option 3, you can use any old computer and install NAS software onto it. One very popular NAS software is FreeNAS (http://www.freenas.org/) which is basically a stripped down version of FreeBSD. Another popular NAS software is unRAID (https://lime-technology.com/)
All 3 options are accessible to Windows, Linux and even Mac OS.
