Cannot download files from Internet Explorer

I’ve been using Internet Explorer as my default browser for a long time now. I never had any problems using this. But yesterday, I was not able to download specific files from a website. It seems strange because I can be able to access different Web Pages, I can check my mails, and everything except for downloading a file. I am receiving an error that IE cannot download the file from my local host. I can download files using a different browser such as Firefox. I am running Windows XP and will appreciate any help to fix this. Thanks.

This problem lies in your Temporary Internet Files Folder. The index.dat file may be damaged. So we need to delete the index.dat and restart your computer. Then you can be able to download files again using your Internet Explorer. To delete index.dat please follow the instructions below:

1. Open your Internet Explorer.

2. Click Tools then Internet Options.

3. Click Delete Files under the General tab under Temporary Internet Files.

4. Click OK to confirm if you want to delete the file.

5. Click Clear History under the History section of General tab.

6. Then close your Internet Explorer.

7. Click Start then click log off then log onto another user account such as Administrator.

8. Click Start then Run.

9. Type cmd in the run box then press enter to open the command prompt window.

10. Type the following command to change the directories to the Temporary Internet Files directory; this will substitute the drive letter and the username with the correct user in Windows XP.

CD drive:Documents and SettingsusernameLocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.IE5

E. g. CD c:Documents and SettingsPaulsComputerLocal SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.IE5

11. Type Del index.dat then press Enter.

12. Type exit to close the cmd window.

13. Restart your computer.

14. After the restart, open a webpage then tries downloading any file again. It should now work.
