I was wondering whether it is possible to add sound files to a Word documents or not. That is, can we make a Word document a multimedia file ? If possible how can I do that-I have no idea. Can any one help me?

Sorry what you wants is really very difficult or almost impossible because as these all (word, excel, PowerPoint) are the product of Microsoft and they design it in a way that each plays and important role but with different features. So you cannot change your word document into a multimedia file.

Yes there is a solution which is not solve your problem but it is little bit related in a sense that this solution helps you to easily access onto that particular multimedia site or file from your word document and that solution is that whatever you like to add into your word document as a multimedia then you can copy and paste that link only into your file and just by pressing ctrl+left mouse click you can directly access towards that page other wise no any other fixed or easy solution.

Adding a sound file to a Word document
I'm not certain what you are trying to accomplish as your end goal but you cannot turn Word into a multimedia file as in put in words and make it turn into a song. You can embed a multimedia file into Word. You can turn PowerPoint into a presentation subsequently a multimedia file. You can add a songs to the file and insert graphics and then make them simultaneous so it is a sort of movie or video. You can also insert a movie or video clips into powerpoint. Now, to embed multimedia files into Word or PowerPoint, you: Open Adobe PDF – Embed Flash – select your file. There are skins here you can choose if you like. Click OK. Acrobat converts the file and inserts it into the document. Create a PDF like normal. Save Adobe PDF File – Options – Convert Multimedia.
Adding a sound file to a Word document
You can do it and just follow the instructions given below

First be confirmed that the sound recorder program is installed and at the same time a sound card is mounted with proper driver software installed on your computer so that you can record, edit and play sound files.
To record a sound, you have to-

Click on Start button-> go to All Programs -> Accessories-> Entertainment-> click on Sound Recorder (you may also get help by reading the help file regarding this)
To insert a sound file in your document, do the followings-

(To insert an existing file)

Click on the Insert menu-> click on Object -> click on the tab of Create from File

Now click on Browse and you need to show the location your target sound file you need to insert.
(To insert the sound file as one of the linked objects)

After inserting the existing file, just click on the check box of Link to file.
(To display the file as icon)

You’ll have to select the check box of Display as icon.
To play the sound file, you have to double click on the icon only.

Connect an audio input device like a microphone to your computer.

Click on the Insert menu-> click on Object -> click on the tab of Create New

You will notice that under Object type several types regarding the sound program are given as a list. If you prefer Sound Recorder, click on Wave Sound.

Now, record the sound from your sound program.

To play the sound file, you have to double click on the icon of the sound file.

Click on the Insert menu-> click on picture -> click on Clip Art

At the bottom end of the Insert Art task pane, click on the Organize clips.

If you are using the Clip Organizer for the first time, click on Now to let Clip Organizer import those media clip files. You can also take help from Clip Organizer Help on the help menu in the Clip Organizer. Now to play the sound file, just double click on the icon of the file.

In the Sound dialog box, type the path or web address of the sound file you are seeking. You can also browse to locate the sound file.

In the Loop box, type the quantity as the number of times you want the sound as a background to get repeated.

You can turn off the background sound by clicking Design mode on the Web Tools toolbar. Again, you can turn it on by clicking the Exit Design Mode.
Any user needs to hear the background sound, must have a sound card installed and sound box or speaker connected to the computer. Web browsers should support types of sound files you are using as a background. You can use several sound file formats like WAV, MID, AU, AIF, RMI, SND, and MP2 and MP3.

For preventing the repetition of the file playing, you can insert a hyperlink of the sound so that users can download and play the file whenever they need. If you select the Infinite looping option, you have to think at the same time that users cannot change the setting to make the sound to stop.
