Two days before as I started my pc the orange shield appeared indicating that automatic update was ready. I clicked the shield and updates installed. Last day I did not receive any automatic update and so I tried to install manually. Each step seemed quite long enough and finally a message appeared indicating Error 0x80070420. I went through the steps again and again but in vain and now I am pointless that why I am receiving this message.

Can anyone please give me some solution?

Such type of error 0x80070420 occurs in Windows Update. The main reason of this error that the windows updates has been stop in the middle of their installation process, I will suggest you solution.
First of all make sure you have installed “Windows Installer 3.1” or not in your computer. This error describes that you are not able to install the windows updates when you try to access them from the site.

  • Go to your “Control Panel” and click twice on “Add/Remove Programs”.
  • Under “Change or Remove Programs” locate the program Windows installer 3.1.
  • On Windows Installer 3.1, click on “Remove to uninstall it” and then restart your PC.
  • Now, set up the application of Windows Installer 3.1 then Restart your computer.

Now access the Windows Update option and start downloading once again the updates.
You may also encounter with this error if installed “Windows XP” has not been activated.

Hello Dixon,

Such an error may occur if you are trying to run the updates while you have very slow internet connection speed. You will therefore need to check your internet status and ping for any issues that may be causing the slowness. If you are using a modem you can try restarting it and see if that will help.

Nicke
