LG is not always on top of the list when talking about premium Smartphones. But it doesn’t mean that LG is making poor quality devices; the South Korean phone-maker just can’t manage to create the same hype, just like Apple or Samsung did for many years.
The company has unveiled the LG G6 at the Mobile World Congress last February and it’s likely to be their latest flagship offering and the most stylish till date. Not only that, the company is offering a Dolby Vision HDR imaging, making it the first Smartphone to feature a High Dynamic Range video technology, which transforms your viewing experience with an astounding brightness, ultravivid colors, and a striking contrast that is normally seen in high-end TVs and cinema. With LG G6 featuring Dolby Vision, the consumers may notice the quality of the image that is closer to the naked eye.
Originally, it was conceived for the cinema and later became available on televisions, including Vizio and LG models, the 5.7’-inch screen of the LG G6 will be the littlest device to feature the Dolby Vision HDR. But the size won’t affect the detail of the image or the light surrounding when watching videos. Another reason why consumers would love the LG G6 is its battery power. The LCD doesn’t need to be fully brighten to show the image in HDR, so it saves 15% of the battery. Furthermore, the consumers will get to spend less data charges when streaming since the Dolby Vision use lesser bits per second on a compatible device, without affecting the quality; something that the HDR 10, its rival format, could not offer.
With regards to the content, any compatible titles of the Dolby Vision that are presently available on Amazon and Neflix will be available at the launch of LG’s latest Smartphone. There are over 85 Hollywood titles and almost 100 hours of television programming will be available through all streaming partners, such as Vudu. The LG G6 is also compatible with HDR 10; though the formats are the same, there are also some differences.
Aside from Dolby Vision HDR, the LG G6 is comprised with sophisticated design. It might not match the beauty of Samsung Galaxy S8’s curved display, but the LG G6 has eliminated a huge piece of the bezel that usually reduce the 5.7-inch screen size. Surrounded the phone is an aluminum frame, with Gorillas Glass 3 and a durable Gorillas Glass 5 to secure the front and rear of the LG G6, respectively. G6 has no bulging camera bump and has its own rear-facing fingerprint sensor, and the reason why it didn’t use the Gorillas Glass 5 in the front and back of the device.
You can see the USB-C connector and a single speaker at the bottom of the device, while the headphone jack was placed on top. The company also opted to increase the 2,800mAh battery size to 3,300mAh, which provides longer battery life.
LG was known to be the king of televisions and it’s not very surprising that the company has managed to provide a laudable Smartphone screen. Unexpectedly, instead of using OLED for the display, the LG G6 is using an LCD technology; but it doesn’t mean that the display lacks quality. The Dolby Vision’s High Dynamic Range content provides implausible color and better detail of the contrast between the brightest and darkest black and white, respectively. The device is also offering a 18:9 aspect ratio, which means the display two times wider as it is high.
LG is known for providing impressive cameras on many of their Smartphones and the G6 is no exception. The flagship device boasts a 13-Megapixel dual-lens rear camera; the first one is an optical zoom lens and another one that offers a wide-angle view. The main camera features an Optical Image Stabilization and a fast aperture of f/1.8, while the wide-angle sensor has an aperture of f/2.4. This only means that images from the wide-angle sensor are less sharp, but the LG G6’s 125-degree lens can capture an image view better than the iPhone 7 Plus with a max of 75.4 degrees. The 5-Megapixel selfie cam also has a wide-angle lens that can shoot up to 100 degrees.
Similar to other flagship Smartphones, the LG G6 is water resistance and iP68 certified, which is capable of submerging up to 1.5-meters of water for 30 minutes. It also boasts a Dual Acoustic Overload Point mics, which make it capable of capturing full, high, and rich quality sound. It is powered by Android’s latest OS, the 7.0 Nougat , and a Snapdragon 821 with 4GB of RAM and a microSD slot, which can carry up to 256GB.
The price tag of LG’s latest flagship is $1009, which is pretty affordable. Even though it is the first Smartphone to debut Dolby Vision HDR, many consumers might want to see it on local cinema than in Smartphones. But it is reassuring that the electronic manufacturer continues to apply a traditionalist approach where possible.
