Windows BitLocker is the feature that provides better data protection for your computer, by providing encryption with the password for all data stored on the partition. It is a premium feature and has been made available by Microsoft only in Ultimate and Enterprise Editions of Windows 7.

Upgrade to either of the two editions to use this feature. BitLocker utilizes the Trusted Partition Module to lock the keys of encryption that protects the data. Until the TPM hasn’t verified the computer’s state, the keys cannot be accessed. It ensures the protection of data.

BitLocker is a tool built into Microsoft Windows that allows you to encrypt an entire hard drive to enhance security. BitLocker To Go and BitLocker Drive Encryption is included in Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8 (Professional and Enterprise editions), and Windows 10 (Professional and Enterprise editions). But beginning with Windows 8.1 (Home and Professional editions), the operating system includes a feature called “Device Encryption” which works similarly.

Windows 10 also features “Device Encryption.” Now, to use BitLocker on a drive, you need to enable it, select an unlock method like PIN or password, and set a few other options. Before you can enable or activate BitLocker for a drive, you first need to have a supported edition of Microsoft Windows.

Even if you have Windows 7, Windows 8.x, or Windows 10, BitLocker will still not work or be available if you don’t have the required edition. If you are using the supported edition, start Windows Explorer or File Explorer then right-click the drive you want to enable BitLocker then select “Turn on BitLocker.”

Note: before you can encrypt an entire system drive, BitLocker’s full-disk encryption requires that your motherboard support TPM or Trusted Platform Module. If your computer doesn’t have TPM, you can use Group Policy to enable BitLocker without TPM. After this, select an unlock method.

If you are encrypting a system drive but your computer doesn’t support TPM, you can select to unlock using a password or a USB flash drive. But if your computer supports TPM, you will be provided with additional options for unlocking your system drive.

After setting up your unlock method, click “Next.” After this, BitLocker will provide you with a recovery key in case you forgot your password. Select a method how you want the key to be backed up.

Next, select how much of your drive BitLocker should encrypt then click “Next.” Next, select an encryption mode you want BitLocker to use then click “Next.” Finally, click “Start encrypting” to begin encrypting the drive.
