This error happens when the boot.ini becomes corrupted.

To fix this follow the solutions below

1. Check if the computer boot.ini file is present or not corrupted

To view and edit the Boot.ini file:

– Right-click on My Computer -> Properties or click Start -> Run, type sysdm.cpl -> OK.

–  Go to Advanced tab, -> Settings under Startup and Recovery.

– On the System Startup, click Edit.

Sample Boot.ini for Windows XP Professional

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

2. Check if your computer still has the hal.dll file

MS-DOS "C:>" -> type  dir hal.dll /s if Windows tells you file not found then hal.dll file has been deleted.

To recover boot the operating system CD and choose the option Repair this may require administrative rights. Open MS-DOS and type,

expand x:i386hal.dl_ y:windowssystem32

x: is the letter of your CD-ROM while y:is the letter of your default disk drive.

3. Last and final option  would be reinstalling your Operating System.

I think this problem is similar to a missing NTLDR file. Like with a missing NTLDR file, the error usually appears if any of these files [ntldr, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini] is missing or cannot be found the time you boot the computer. If this is the first time you encounter this error, try restarting your computer because the error could just be a fluke or a glitch in the system when it was booting. If after restarting your computer you see the same error again, check your optical drive if there is a disc inside, you need to remove it. Check if you have any flash drive or external hard drive connected to one of the USB ports in the CPU, remove it as well and then restart the computer.

If you are still stuck with that error, you may need to extract the file from your Windows installer disc. Insert your Windows installer disc on to your optical drive then open Windows Explorer. Browse the disc and search for the file. In Windows XP installer disc, it is located in i386 folder. Extract the file in C:WINDOWSsystem32.
