I am facing a weird problem now a day. My system is gradually decreasing in performance due to high disk activity from system process and perform.exe.

Whenever the high disk activity occurs, my RAM usage drops from approximately 1.6GB to just 600MB. I don not know the reason for this error but I am facing this since last about two weeks and could not find any solution yet.

Also this high hard disk activity problem will occur anytime whether I am playing some game, browsing or doing nothing.

  • First of all I will suggest replacing your RAM. Then check out how many programs you are running in the background. As you said that high disk error occurs even you are doing nothing. That simply means that either you are running a number of programs in the background or one or two heavy software like some antivirus or anti-spam. So try closing all background utilities.
  • Also try to turn some of windows features off and monitor the usage of the system, when it is idle and under load. If the problem is occurring due to hard disk then try using some good quality software to defrag your hard disk. Run a full virus scan to see whether your system is infected with some kind of mal-ware. And not only for virus but running a scan for windows registry and disk cleanup will also help find and resolve the problem.
  • Also how old is your system? Sometimes errors also occur due to old one or more hardware. Make sure all your hardwares are compatible with the latest drivers and softwares you are running on your system. Also compatibility of motherboard and other hardwares like RAM, Processor are also necessary.
  • Try changing your PSU because if you are using a low quality power supplier then there are chances that it can easily destroy your build with unstable/insufficient power. RAM can also cause instability issues. Check your task manager to see what processes are loading your usage percentages.
