i am using a desktop pc which was bought 2 years ago. recently my DVD writer started going mad. it mysteriously comes out and stays. when i put a dvd and send it back in, it detects it and runs the dvd. but when nothing is in it, the tray comes out. i was wondering whether it could be a virus. but since it happens even before OS loads i came to a conclusions that its not a virus. so someone please tell me a solution for this problem.

Problem with my DVD Rom when not in use
Heshanera
Hi,
This is a hardware issue. However to be very sure, you can place another Cd Rom Drive or DVD writer just on temporary basis, and check its behavior. If you do not see any such occurrence, than come back to the hardware.
Possible the Puck behind the DVD writer, OR its belt may have become faulty.
As long as the DVD WR is working ,you should avoid giving it to any mechanic, simply forcefully close the tray.

Dear Heshanera
According to you, ".i was wondering whether it could be a virus. but since it happens even before OS loads i came to a conclusions that its not a virus", so you are sure that it is not a virus, did you download too much software to your hard disk? Sometimes, the too much installation of different software can cause of slow performance of your computer system. According also to you, whenever you use your DVD Drive, it just bring back the cd outside, one reason that I can see is the part of your DVD, one thing that I notice with my DVD player when happens to face an error just like you is that, the player would not receive any cd due to the system overload and system defect. Your DVD may have too much residue inside, like dust or dirt, you have to clean that and make sure that your DVD writer is clean because it may also cause error to your system.Â

No, that problem is not from a virus. If your optical drive behaves like that, there is probably something wrong with an inner component that keeps the tray inside. The problem can be from any component inside. It can be from the ribbon cable that connects the mechanism of the lens to the optical drive’s board, the board itself, or other small electronic component.
If your optical drive is working fine like it can still read discs and burn blank CDs and DVDs, then there should be no problem. I am using a computer for over ten years and the problem I noticed with optical drives, whether a CD or a DVD, is with the tray. This is always the problem.
With all the optical drives I’ve used, it always ends up with a tray that doesn’t eject after using it for many years. I always have to insert a pin in the hole to eject the tray. If the main function of the optical drive to read discs is fine, there’s no problem continue using it.
