How can I identify a USB 3.0 port on my computer?

My laptop has two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports. The problem is that I never seem to remember how they are distributed.

How can I be sure which are which? Is there a way to differentiate between the two? What happens if I attach a USB 3.0 device in a USB 2.0 port?

Hello,

USB 3.0 ports generally are different in color – they are generally in blue color. There are also 2 extra pins for faster performance. Other USB 2.0, USB 1.1 or USB 1 ports are same, no difference.

You can also check your port type from “Device Manager”.

1. From Start menu, type “devmgmt.msc” >> hit Enter.

2. Expand the “Universal Serial Bus controller” section.

If you see any entry named “Enhanced”, there are USB 2.0 ports. If you find out any entry named “xHCI” or “Extensible Host Controller Interface” or “USB 3.0”, the port is USB 3.0.
