Hardware Conflicts of Sound Device With Image
It may be because of driver conflicts. first of all please remove all the installed sound card drivers from your computer. i mean all of the installed sound drivers including your other sound card drivers
Then restart your computer and normally it will detect your sound card driver and add new hardware wizard will appear. then use correct driver and install it.
If your problem still exist please do as follows
You have mentioned that you are running XP SP2, do you update windows regularly ? if you are not please update your windows. especially critical updates and patches. then install driver. then it will work.
Note – if your computer is infected with a virus or any other malicious program situation may vary
Otherwise it will be fine with above mentioned methods
Thanks

Check on the device manager settings and try to configure all the required settings. On the Audio files, make sure all the audio are not mute. Check the resources well and make sure they are all on and available.
The soundcard should also be well fixed and is comparable with the configurations.
Then restart the computer to hear the sound.
