While it doesn’t really matter what colour your device is, the last few years have brought a slew of unusual colour schemes. Manufacturers have moved away from the cold and traditional shades of black, white, and grey, and the results are frequently as pleasing to the eye as they are ridiculous to read aloud.
1. Aura Glow – Found In The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 And Note 10+
It’s one thing to slap the word ‘prism’ on half of the Galaxy S10 and S10 colour options, but it’s quite another to slap the word ‘aura’ at the end. The aura of mystery that accompanies such an expensive device. Who are you to spend so much money on a phone? Anyway, in terms of words, aura is particularly color-neutral.
2. Warm Silver – Found In The Sony Xzs
Never heard the colour silver described as warm before, and many people never think or see the two words sitting next to each other again. It’s a little upsetting. Silver, like many other metals, isn’t something your brain intuitively associates with the concept of heat.
3. New Aurora Black – Found In The LG V50 Thinq 5G
To begin with, when most people think of auroras, black isn’t the first colour that comes to mind. It’s about as far as you can get from the colour of an aurora. Second, what became of the old Aurora Black? Will LG bring it back in the future due to popular demand? None of these questions are relevant, and every aspect of this name is ridiculous.
4. Speed Orange – Found In The Oneplus 6T
These colours, like many of the other exhibits in this absurd listicle, raise more questions than answers. What’s the deal with the black mirror? Why isn’t speed red used? Isn’t red supposed to make things go faster? Many will give credit where credit is due and admit that these colour variants of OnePlus’ latest flagship do look quite cool – but boy do they sound dumb.
5. Breathing Crystal – Found In The Huawei P30 Pro
Okay, so it’s pretty easy to dunk on how ridiculous this colour sounds (because it really does), but to be fair, Huawei’s successor to the P20 Pro’s Twilight Blue has inspired enough imitators. It still sounds a little silly and abstract. This colour screams, “Make jokes about how ridiculous it sounds.” It’s the smartphone colour equivalent of click bait, and they’ve obviously succumbed to it.
6. Ice Jade White – Found In The Oppo A9
Ice Jade White has a lot going on in terms of colours. It’s very crowded. To Oppo’s credit, it does start strong, but it doesn’t take long to get lost in the mix. It would have sufficed to call this one ‘Ice White.’ Why are you attempting to insert the word Jade? Mica Green and Fluorite Purple are the only other A9 colour options.
7. Forbidden City Blue – Found In The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3
To be honest, people don’t know enough about blue to say whether it’s a good colour to associate with China’s Forbidden City. That being said, as far as smartphone colours go, this one sounds fantastic. I’m totally down for it. even go so far as to encourage other manufacturers to follow suit. Who wouldn’t want to see a phone in “Adelaide Bronze” or “Singapore Green”?
8. Flash Grey – Found In The Motorola Moto E5
Okay, let’s get back to business. Grey flash. This one is out of the ordinary. Like Warm Silver, not sure what connection my brain should be making here. Grey is a duller version of white by definition, so I’m not sure what Motorola and Lenovo are getting at here. The word silver appears here as well.
9. Radiant Mist – Found In The Oppo R17 Pro
Not sure what to think about this one. It’s one of those vague and non-specific smartphone colours where the name is likely to evoke something slightly different for everyone – not ideal for a clear marketing message. It’s also a little contradictory. The first half of the name conjures up images of warmer colours, while the second half conjures up images of cooler tones.
10. Greenery – Found In The Huawei P10
Like the colour, but the name feels rushed and unfinished. They could have easily cut it off and stopped at green, and everything would have been fine. Instead, for unknown reasons, they forged ahead into unknown lands, with questionable outcomes.”Can see the case for this precursor to the Pixel’s adorable colour options, but it’s mostly just ridiculous the entire time.”
