USB disk cannot be accessed on Windows XP computer

At home I use windows XP and Windows Server 2003 operating system. Often I use Windows Server .Every time I use Windows XP operating system, but the problem is that a have a USB drive, my USB drive work ok on my office PC, and also on my home PC when I work in Windows Server 2003 but it does not work in windows XP, I try it same port when use windows XP and Windows Server, I use license copy antivirus, sometimes my pen drive work ok on Windows XP and occasionally can’t work what’s the problem how can I solve it?

You can resolve your problem by reinstalling the USB controllers using windows XP. You have to uninstall and reinstall your USB controllers to refresh the driver.
Follow the procedures below:
• First, Go to Start menu.
• Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
• Select Hardware tab and click the Device Manager.
• Select the Universal Serial Bus controllers and click the (+) sign to expand.
• Right click all the devices one by one in the USB controllers to select uninstall.
Then restart your computer it will automatically reinstall USB Controller drivers.
Another solution:
• Go to Device manager as shown above.
• If there is a device with a yellow exclamation mark into Universal Serial Bus controllers.
• Right click on the yellow exclamation and click install.
• Restart your computer.
You can try the ""Install New Hardware"" option to help the operating system recognizes the peripheral device. Before you perform this action make sure the device is connected to your PC. Go to Control Panel and click the Add Hardware.
Click Next and select Yes, I have already connected the hardware the click Next.
Select USB controller devices one by one to check the status if all of them is working properly.
If some of them are not working properly, click Finish to precede USB troubleshooter.
Using Power Management.
• Right click My Computer and select Manage.
• Select Device Manager then presses Tab once.
• Go to the Universal serial Bus
• Just right click the “USB Root Hub” to select Properties.
• Click the Power Management Tab on the USB Root Hub Properties dialog box.
Click the check box of Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power then click OK.
Do repeat the steps to the other USB Root Hub.
Scan for Hardware Changes in your Device Manager.
Follow these steps:
• Click on Start and type Devmgmt.sc in Run and press enter
• Click the Action tab, and then click Scan for hardware changes.
• Windows will scan & recognize any new devices that are installed.
Now, restart your computer and see if your computer detects the USB device.
If it is still doesn't work, follow the method below.
Update the USB Root Hub.
• Go to USB controller as shown in the above steps.
• Right click the “USB Root” Hub and select Update Driver.
• You must have access to the Internet to start Windows update.

Normally, in XP, all USB device is in plug and play mode. But in 2003 Operating system, all USB devices could not be working normally without the accurate driver. So when using it in 2003, you must install the required driver which is in need according to the device. The device could not be work be work occasionally because of haziness of USB port on Windows XP. It needs to be cleaned with contact cleaner sometimes.

That would depend if Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are running on different computers and not on the same computer using multi-boot. If both operating systems are on separate computers and your USB flash drive works on the computer with Windows Server 2003 but not on the computer with Windows XP, one possible cause is the USB port.
If your USB flash drive doesn’t work on any of the USB ports on the computer with Windows XP, try connecting a different USB device like an external hard drive or another USB flash drive that is different from the one that is not working. If the same thing happens when connecting a different drive, check if Windows XP can detect your USB drive.
If the drive can be detected but it is not working properly, try using the System File Checker utility. Press the Windows key + R to bring up the Run dialog then type without quotes “cmd” then hit Enter. In the command prompt window, type without quotes “sfc /scannow” then hit Enter.
When you are prompted to insert the setup CD, insert your Windows XP setup CD on your optical drive and continue. Wait until the process is complete. The System File Checker tool scans your computer’s protected system files for incorrect versions and replaces them with correct ones. When it is complete, close the command prompt and restart the computer. See if this works.
PCI Express USB card
If this doesn’t fix the problem, try formatting your computer and install a fresh copy of Windows XP. See if this works. If none of these work, the USB ports are probably damaged. One workaround is to buy a PCI or PCI Express USB card to allow you to use USB devices on your Windows XP computer.
