Error 0x80070006 on Windows 7 Installation and Expanding Files

I have a new Core i7 Desktop PC previously installed on Windows XP. When I try to install Windows 7 on my computer, I receive the Error Code: 0X80070006

I tried many times to fix it, but no result. This happens only when Windows starts to expand the files and at 0%. There are two HD drives and I removed the external one to check what the problem is. In the primary disk there is Windows XP SP3 installed on the C drive. I tried installing Win 7 using a flash drive but same problem. I'm not sure what is the solution for that ?? I have a wireless connection to connect to the Internet.

I am assuming that you are trying to install Windows 7 within the XP operating system. If that is the case, I am also assuming that you are doing it as an upgrade, and that the files are being downloaded from the internet.

There are a lot of factors to consider, however the answer is quite short:

  1. Still, the best way to install Windows 7 is to get rid of XP completely. As a technical person, upgrading from one version of an Operating System to another without removing the previous version sometimes creates problems in the future. Therefore, it is always advisable to install Windows 7 after reformatting the entire hard drive thus removing XP from the system. However, to be able to accomplish this, you need to purchase an installation CD for Windows 7. Or you can actually download it from Microsoft and burn it on a DVD.
  2. Now if you really want to just upgrade to Windows 7 without removing the XP system, then there are certain things that we need to consider. This kind of error happens if there is not enough space for the installer to expand the files, or you have more than 1 Operating System on the computer, meaning you dual boot. If it’s the first, then you need to check your hard drive’s free space.
  3. Another thing is once the program has initiated and it asks you change the boot sequence, just disregard it. Remember that in order for the upgrade from XP to Windows 7 to take place, it needs to be initiated from within the Win XP environment. That is, you start the program while logged in to windows XP.
  4. There are times that an Antivirus program might affect the process. With that, you might want to disable your Antivirus program first before starting the Windows 7 installation.
  5. Also free as many resources as you can from your system. And anything that you don’t need. Or just do a clean boot. This can be achieved by disabling all the programs that’s being loaded during startup. To do this, click on start – run – type “ msconfig “ – then press enter. Click on the tab that says start up and then way below click on disable all. Click Apply and then OK to close the window.

Restart the computer, and then try to install Windows 7 again. Hope this helps.

Check your RAM card. Sometimes these problems occur, when the RAM card or the processor goes to bed. If there are any lost connections between SATA (IDE) cables this kind of errors can occur. If you want to maintain two operating systems, firstly you have to format your system and install Windows 7 first after that, try the other one.
