What is the SDK for the Apple TV?

I read somewhere that Apple may come out with an SDK for the Apple TV?  What's an SDK for the Apple TV?  How important is the SDK for the Apple TV to developers?

What is the SDK for the Apple TV?

Though  WWDC is just a few days ahead, some rumors are continuing to float up. The newest rumor comes from BGR  that has published that apple is planning to reveal a brand new Apple TV software development kit at its world wide developers conference in san Francisco next week. This would allow third-party developers to create software for Apple’s TV products.

The SDK for Apple TV would unlock the living room up to developers who could engrave games, official software and other big screen applications. The SDK would wire a significant advancement of the Apple TV. It could also cover the way the long rumored Apple TV set.
