History
In 1956, our Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru went to West Germany, and the government of the Federal Republic of Germany gave an offer to Nehru, to set up a higher technological Institute in India. Prof. Humayun Kabir, who was the Union Minister of Scientific and Cultural Affairs, inaugurated this Institute in 1959.
2. IIT Delhi
Overview
The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, is one of the most famous Institutes for research, and development in science, technology, and engineering. According to the NIRF, in 2023, IITD got 2nd position.
History
The British Government negotiated with the Government of India for collaboration. The collaboration aimed was to set up an Institute of Technology in Delhi. The British government agreed to the partnership. IITD established a trust with the help of the UK Government. The name of that trust is Delhi Engineering College Trust. The college was formally inaugurated in 1961 by Prof. Humayun Kabir, who was the Minister of Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. The first admission was completed in 1961.
3. IIT Bombay
Overview
This Institute is famous worldwide for its engineering education and research. Many researchers are reputed for their research contributions internationally. This Institute has initiated some short- term courses, so that students can continue their education. Faculty members have won many prestigious awards like the Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar and Padma awards.
History
IIT Bombay was established in 1958. The funds for this came from UNESCO. In 1961, this Institute was declared as the ‘Institute of National Importance’. After completion of the construction, the Institute’s first academic session was started in 1958 with 100 students. A total of ten teachers were appointed in 1958. Among these ten teachers, four were Indians, and the other six were selected for advanced training in the USSR. The cornerstone of the Institute was laid (1959, 10 March) by Jawaharlal Neheru at Powai.
4. IIT Kanpur
Overview
In NIRF 2023, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur ranked 4th. This Institute was established in 1959 by the Government of India. It is a public Institute of Technology Research University established by the Government of India. Many students at this Institute got placement offers in 2023. History
The first IIT was born in Hijli, Kharagpur, in 1950. IIT Kharagpur was inaugurated on August 18, 1951, by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Old Hijli Detention Camp is the place where IIT Kharagpur started its journey. In 1952, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone for the new building.
6. IIT Roorkee

IIT Roorkee was established in 1847 by James Thomason. 7. IIT Guwahati

9. IIT Tiruchirapalli

Indian Institute of Information Technology Tiruchirapalli (IIITT), also known as IIT Trichy. It is located in Tamil Nadu. History
IIITT has been operating all its work within the premises of the National Institute of Technology since 2016. After that, they changed their campus to the premises of Oxford Engineering College Campus in 2020. At last, it started operating from the permanent campus at Sethurappatti in 2021.
10. IIT Varanasi

IIT Varanasi is the Indian Institute of Technology Banaras Hindu University. It is located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It is a Public Technical University. It has taken the 10th position in the NIRF ranking for 2023.
History
In 1919, it was started as the Banaras Engineering College. In 1968, it became the Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (BHU). In 2012, it was designated an Indian Institute of Technology. The Institute celebrated its 100 years in 2019-2020.
