My Windows computer has a larger hard drive than my Mac and storage is now a problem, especially my music and video files. I want to hook up my Mac to my Windows PC, so that I can transfer files quickly without hassles.
What devices should I purchase if ever I need to purchase any. Please give me your recommendations.

Can you network a Mac and a Windows computer and transfer files
There is no need to purchase any device if you really want to transfer your files from your Windows based computer to Mac based computer. Simply connect both machines with a cross cable because both are using the same protocol for file transfer.
What you have to do is, make a cross cable, see their combination on Google. When we have to connect both the same devices we use cross connection cable but now a days your straight cable can also work properly due to the use of advanced LAN Card. Connect both the systems and share your files. Then assign an IP address to each system keeping their network address same and access your files on other machine.

Thanks.
Can you network a Mac and a Windows computer and transfer files
You can easily join workgroup of Windows from your MAC and can share and transfer files over it.
Before doing anything, please check in your Windows what the network group name is. Is it workgroup or home group?
-
Open your network preferences and unlock the padlock.
-
Now in the search field, write the name of the workgroup you want to join.
-
Now enter the name of your MAC in NETBIOS field.
-
Press ok and click apply. You have joined the Windows workgroup, now you can share your files easily.
Hope you will be able to solve your problem.
