Thunderbolt technology is a technology that we use to transfer data between computers and devices. Remarkable thing is that the speed of this thunderbolt technology. Â For data transfer we use a cable like USB cable but the speed of the medium is very fast.
Thunderbolt technology was developed by Intel.  First they have introduced this thunderbolt technology for the fastest data transfer.  You can have the opportunity to connect the display to "iMac" from your "MacBook Pro" or from "MacBook Air" by  using thunderbolt port.  New launched "iMac" PCs  contain in built thunderbolt technology to do more work as said above.  That's how Apple uses it. Â
The speed of a thunderbolt cable is 10Gbps ( which means that you can transfer HD movies less than 30 seconds between computers and between devices ).
The Thunderbolt technology is actually not an Apple technology. It is somewhat the result of Intel’s handiwork in combination with Apple’s mini DisplayPort. The Thunderbolt technology was Intel’s Light Peak. Thunderbolt was developed by Intel using the name Light Peak. It is a hardware interface allowing connection of external peripherals to a computer. Thunderbolt 1 and 2 use the same connector as with MDP or Mini DisplayPort.
Thunderbolt 3, on the other hand, will use USB Type-C. It was on February 24, 2011 when it was first sold as part of a consumer product. As Light Peak was built to work or operate over fiber, Thunderbolt is applied over copper. Even if this is the case, you will still be having bi-directional 10 Gbps connection over a cable including a 10 watt feed to be able to power heavy equipment on the go which you will not get on a regular USB.
Thunderbolt combines DP or DisplayPort and PCIe or PCI Express into a single serial signal. One connector can support up to 6 peripherals using different topologies.
