The first reference of the word incognito or protected/privacy browsing came with Safari in Mac OS X Tiger. In that version (i.e. Safari 2.0) it was called “Private Browsing” it was released in 2005. So it is safe to say that Apple were the inventors of this kind of browsing. After apple Google popularized it via the “Incognito Mode” of “Google Chrome”.
After the incognito mode introduced by Google in “Chrome 1.0” many different companies and organizations have incorporated privacy browsing in their respected browsers.
Even thou one is using privacy mode it is still possible to identify frequently visited websites by affiliating the IP address of the user with the user instance it creates on the server end. Mostly a Privacy mode will disable the storage of data and trackers in cookies or Flash cookies.
Privacy mode or simply private browsing is also sometimes informally referred to as porn mode. The term actually refers to the privacy features of some web browsers. Traditionally, web browsers store information on the computer like browsing history, videos, text, and images in a form of cache. Opposite to this, enabling privacy mode will prevent the web browser from storing any of these information for the selected browsing session.
This lets the user surf the web without storing local data that can be recovered at a later time. It will also prevent the web browser from storing cookies and Flash cookies. It was in May of 2005 that this term was first used to describe the privacy features of the Safari browser which was bundled with Mac OS X Tiger.
Since then this feature has been adopted in other web browsers that led to its popularization in 2008 by typical news outlets and computing websites when they are discussing the beta versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer 8. Adobe Flash Player, the very common web browser plug-in, began supporting privacy mode with their release version 10.1 in June of 2010 for browsers Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Internet Explorer.
Different web browsers gave different names for the privacy mode such as Private Browsing, Incognito, InPrivate Browsing, Private Browsing, and Private Tab or Private Window. See image for complete details.
