Hello, James!
Winlock virus mainly exploits the users by tricking them to pay with money to recover computer to the previous state, which is absolutely false. To avoid possible infection with Trojan-Ransom family(Winlock) virus, download and install Kaspersky Internet Security 2014, which includes very high level of protection against various types of malware.

What are the best security strategies against winlock virus?
According to Panda Security, WinLock is a type of hacking tool. Even if they are not viruses by nature, these tools are considered as dangerous to victims of attacks. Unlike normal viruses that spread to different computers, since WinLock is not an actual virus, it doesn’t spread automatically on its own. It requires the intervention of the attacker for the tool to reach the target computer.
The mode of transmission normally includes floppy disks, CD-ROMs, emails with attachments, files downloaded from the internet, FTP, IRC channels, P2P or peer-to-peer file sharing networks, and others. WinLock is normally around 38400 bytes in size. Panda Security simply calls this virus as “WinLock” or “HackTool/WinLock” by its technical name. According to Symantec, WinLock is a Trojan horse that locks the desktop making the machine unusable.
They call it “Trojan.Winlock” which they first discovered in November 6, 2012 and rate the risk as “Risk Level 1: Very Low.”
