Since Microsoft Windows Server 2003 is an operating system for servers, the issues can be caused by different factors mainly hardware if they haven’t installed other applications yet. Windows Server 2003 can be installed on a 32-bit or 64-bit CPU and since it is an old operating system, it doesn’t require high specifications.

If it is installed on a 32-bit-based computer, the computer should have 1 or more processors with at least 550 MHz speed and 128 MB RAM minimum. If it is going to be installed on a 64-bit-based computer, the CPU should have 1 or more processors with at least 1.4 GHz speed and 512 MB RAM minimum.

Since the server is going to be used in school, it should be expected that many students will be connecting to it. If this is the case, the hardware specifications of the server should not stay on the minimum level because it will cause lag and probably crash when too many requests are being processed.

I think that’s the reason why your server lags. They just need to upgrade the hardware of the server to improve its performance. For a 32-bit-based computer, it can be upgraded up to 4 processors maximum and up to 4 GB RAM maximum. This is the same with 64-bit-based CPUs.

Also, the hard drive should be formatted with NTFS file system instead of FAT or FAT32 though FAT and FAT32 can also be used.
