Is ransomware virus attack real?

I heard that there is a kind of virus that can be sent to a computer and the hacker makes it lock your system until you pay a certain amount. Is this true or a hoax? If true, can a normal antivirus protect my computer from such a threat? If an antivirus will not help, what can be implemented to help protect my computer from such an attack?

You should use a batter antivirus for protecting your computer. Microsoft release a good antivirus for good quality for security. So you download Microsoft security essentials antivirus and install properly, but before install you turn on Windows Firewall and connect your Internet connection and update this software. So Your PC is now protected.
