What exactly is Tiered Storage?

Can anyone tell me what is Tired Storage. How this can be useful for home based linux users? Do we need to install any other applications for this purpose?

What exactly is Tiered Storage?

 

 

 

 

It is a way for data to be Stored in different storage devices in order to reduce the cost of data storing in real time scenario. This way helps us to store data across various storage devices like SSD, flash drives. There are various categories for this but it will depend on the way we require the data to be store. Like if we need performance then the category will be different. It depends on how frequent we use the data, how fast it will be used in normal scenarios. There are various tools available to create a tired storage in Linux.

Veritas Storage Foundation is a tool which works for RedHat Linux.

What exactly is Tiered Storage?

Tiered storage is the allocation of various categories of data into different kinds of storage media for the sole purpose of decreasing the total cost of storage. Categories can be based according to levels of required security, needed performance, rate of use, and other considerations. Several vendors offer programs for automatically managing the process according to a company-based policy since it is a continuing and difficult job allocating data to specific media.

For example, tier 1 data such as top secret, recently accessed, or mission-critical files can be stored on high-priced and high-quality media like double-parity RAIDs. Tier 2 data such as rarely-used, financial, or classified files can be stored on cheaper media in conventional SANs or Storage Area Networks. As the tier number increases, least expensive media can be used.
