Error message while running an old game on my new system

Hi,

I became nostalgic the other day and decided to run an old game on my relatively new system.

I got the following message:

When I click OK, a different window pops up:

When I am using Windows 7, the games works fine.

I hope, there is some way I can force my card to recognize the right resolution, so that I don´t have to use Win 7 to run the game!

Thank you in advance for any help you have.

Hello Grant,

Since you are saying the game is working just fine on windows 7, I am sure the operating system you were using when you got that problem is probably windows XP. Usually when you purchase or download a game, the operating systems it can support are indicated. Some games can run well only on windows vista or windows 7 and latter.

So if the game you are running has such specifications then it will not be possible for it to run on windows XP. You will therefore have to download a version of that game that can be supported on the windows XP platform.

If the game is supposed to run on all versions of windows, then you will just need to access you device manager and update your display drivers as follows:

  • Right click on Computer.
  • Choose Properties.
  • Click on Device Manager.
  • Locate Display Adapters and Expend the tab.
  • Right click on the drivers and update them online (Note that you will need to have internet access)

Regards,

Carl

If you have games that run very well on Microsoft Windows 7 but not on Windows 8 or higher, try running the game in compatibility mode for Windows 7. This might enable the program to run on newer operating systems. To try the compatibility mode, right-click your game or your game icon on your desktop and select “Properties.”

Go to “Compatibility” tab and check “Run this program in compatibility mode for.” From the dropdown list, select a version of Windows 7 if there is more than one version listed. After this, click “OK” then try running the game and see if it works.

This is the easiest way to run old programs on new platforms but will still depend on the compatibility because this method may not always work. If the program doesn’t run using this method, another way is to create a virtual machine. You can install Oracle VirtualBox and then create a virtual machine. On that virtual machine, install Windows 7.

You can then install all the programs that normally run well on Windows 7 on that virtual machine. But before you do this, you need to check your computer first if it is fast enough to run two operating systems simultaneously.
