Hello! Lately I have noticed that there are a lot of files in my computer that I don't use very often but which are still very important to me. I wanted to enhance their security so I was thinking of encryption. Will it help? Which software should I use? People usually say that if you don't know much about encryption its better not to use it, so should I do it? Does encryption compress a file as well?
Encrypting file through compressing them and creating password to secure them from unauthorized access. To achieve that;
Open the .rar file-select file on the menu-click on the set default menu and create a password. Your .rar file will now be encrypted with a password. This will limit the access of the file to you only and the person you share the password with. Encrypting files will increase security and limits access.
If you have lots of files on your computer that you are not using but are important to you, one way of protecting them instead of encrypting every file is to compress them protected with a password. It’s just like encrypting them because the files are protected with a password and the good thing about this is that you also save space aside from encrypting them.
Download 7-Zip File Archiver and install it. It supports Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8.x, and Windows 10 both 32-bit and 64-bit. Now, to compress your rarely used files, copy them to a folder then press CTRL + A to select all files. Once all files are selected, right-click on a file then point to “7-Zip” and select “Add to archive.”
7-Zip compress files
On the next screen, make sure “Archive format” is set to “7z” for the best compression. In “Compression level,” set it to “Normal,” “Maximum,” or “Ultra” but not the lower settings. To encrypt your files, on the “Encryption” section, enter your password twice. You can also check “Encrypt file name” to also encrypt the names of the files. When you are finished, click “OK” to begin compressing the files.
7-Zip set compression settings and password
When 7-Zip is finished, you will see the compressed file in 7-Zip format (*.7z). You may now delete the files and leave the 7z file on the folder.
