Dear Maxine,
The new Microsoft Office 2013 that is going to come out will embrace Web Development. What that means is that Microsoft will encourage developers and administrators to use open Web technologies like JavaScript, CSS, HTML to build their add-on apps.
Until now Microsoft has only made it possible to make an add-on app using only Visual Basic for Applications. Now the dogs have been let loose, sort of speak, and everyone with a working knowledge of the above mentioned web technologies will be able to deploy a Web App for MS Office 2013.
Also, unlike previous versions of Office, apps will be stored externally, not within the local copy of Office. This way you could have your Office app on a server somewhere and your Office will have only a URL to it in order to access it. This way the administrators will have more control to manage and update their apps and it will be easier to deploy these add-on apps to each and every PC in a firm, for example. Rather than installing a new copy of the app on every computer on each update, only the server will be updated and all the other PC will connect to it and receive the updated app in seconds.
I hope this helps.
Microsoft already made an announcement about the new Office 13 which is already scheduled for release next to Windows 8 later this year.
MS Word, Excel, OneNote,PowerPoint and Outlook will be having a lot more features involving a touch and metro style user interface and tools that will be appropriate in using Social Networking and Cloud services.
The preview version is available for download here.
You can have 5 installations per user and it won't affect or remove your current Office.
Microsoft has not yet announcing if this will be available on OS X.
