Proper way of learning HTML and HTML5 and what’s behind it?

I am new to web page designing. I want to know the difference between HTML and HTML5? Is it a programming language? How does it work? How did it started? What is the story behind the creation of web pages? Do I need to install any software to create any web page using this? Can you provide me simple – how to create my first web page?
