How to know time passed after last boot on Ubuntu?

Do you know about the function 'uptime' on Ubuntu? I want to find out the time elapsed after the boot on my Ubuntu OS. I have found the function named 'uptime' but I don't know how to use it. 

Please describe how to use the function and also include how it works.
