Facts about non-static variables and static contexts

Hello, I am a first year student studying animation and computing. However, I love programming and I would need a little assistance on a few thoughts bothering my mind when a group of students was debating on the fact that one cannot have access to a non-static variable in a static context. I would like to know the actual fact and the truth of this motion. Thank you.
