I encountered a problem using my newly installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop. According to it, a firmware is missing. At the same time, my wireless network isn’t working too. I don’t know what to do about this. Kindly tell me, what’s the cause of the problem?

A firmware is a set of information stored physically in a device itself that rules how it works. A firmware is missing and the wireless network doesn't work. This is what happened, when you installed Ubuntu it must have erased the firmware that was stored in the device you use for the wireless network. Its rare for a operating system to erase a firmware but could happen. The solution is to install it from the cd that came with your device to download it from the website of the network device manufacturer. If you failed doing both of that then get your device to where you bought it.

The error might not from the Ubuntu operating system. The error occurs because there are problems with your laptops hardware. Or the Ubuntu operating system runs under your computer but the system detects some of hardware attached in your laptop that requires firmware to run in Ubuntu operating system.
There is some hardware that is not working in Ubuntu. Most of these are from Microsoft related hardware specially Intel Motherboards, sound device, network and wireless adapters. The reason behind this is manufacturers for this product doesn’t release a binary file for their drivers.
As of today, Ubuntu developers are trying to resolve this issue. You may find updates of drivers from Ubuntu support site.

You can install Linux Ubuntu on Dell Inspiron 1150 but the problem is the drivers for the hardware. Dell doesn’t have any drivers designed for Ubuntu. They only provide drivers for Microsoft Windows.
