Checking or fixing problems on your hard drive can be done with any disk utility application. Microsoft Windows has its own disk utility included in the system. This is the cheapest and easiest way to check errors on your drive. To try this, start Windows Explorer then right-click the drive you want to check and then select “Properties.”
In the properties window, go to “Tools” tab then click “Check now” under “Error-checking” section. On the next screen, check “Automatically fix file system errors.” If you want to check for bad sectors, check “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.” When you are finished, click “Start” to begin checking the drive.
The length of the scan will depend on the size of the drive and the number of errors. Another way is to use the command prompt. Press the Windows key + R to bring up the “Run” dialog then type without quotes “cmd” and then hit Enter. In the command prompt window, type the following command then hit Enter:
chkdsk [drive] /f
Replace “[drive]” with the drive letter of your target drive that you want to fix. For example:
chkdsk c: /f
To see all available options you can use, use the following command:
chkdsk /?
When you are finished, just close the command prompt. Another way is to use third-party software like PC Tools Performance Toolkit.
