Yes, the DOS and DDOS attacks are not the same. The DOS attack is conducted only from one source whereas, the DDOS attack involves multiple sources. These multiple servers are harder to deflect as compared to a single server. Unlike DOS attack, the aim of DDOS attack is to produce large traffic on the server. The DDOS attacks are conducted using BOTNETS whereas, DOS attacks are launched using DOS tools or homebrewed scripts

Difference Between A DOS And A DDOS Attack

DoS and DDoS attacks are almost identical in the sense that they both send enormous traffic to the targeted system. They only differ in the way they execute the attack. In a DoS attack, the attack is initiated from a single computer and a single internet connection sending huge amounts of traffic to the target network. In DDoS or Distributed Denial of Service attack, the attack is initiated on multiple compromised computers targeting only one system.

A DoS attack can be prevented using different methods like using the tools available on the market. This kind of attack is only successful on undefended victims. While a DDoS attack is nearly impossible to avoid. In a DDoS attack, the victim or the target network is flooded with traffic that originates from different sources.

This makes it impossible to stop the attack by just blocking a single IP address and it is also very hard to identify attack traffic from legitimate user traffic considering that it is spread in so many points of origin.
