I am seeking some advice and help. Whenever I try to link my external hard disk drive through the universal serial bus to my computer, operating on windows 7 64b ultimate edition, windows become sluggish while the mouse lags and as such it takes quite a long time to navigate the display and also when making clicks. Well, the hard disk works well on my laptop operating with windows XP. The fact is that the hard disk is not new. I bought it some time ago but fixed it together so that I could use it.
External hard disk drive not operating on windows 7 64bit
Hi Brenton
The initial things to do is to make sure all cable connections are firm by removing and plugging it in again. Then you can try connecting it to a different USB port and see whether it worked.
This could be caused by a feature called Remote Differential Compressions which is new in both windows 7 and windows vista. To turn it off go to the control panel through Start. Now change the view to classical view. Double click on Program Features. Click on Turn Windows features on and off, scroll down and click on Remote Differential Compression so that it is not checked.

Try the following fix:
1. Check all the USB ports on your computer if its damaged or broken.
2. Check all the cables that connects your computer and external hard drive.
3. Check on the data that are stored in your external drive. If there is too much data on it, it can cause lags and your computer will become slow. Remove any unwanted files to free some space.
4. Perform a System Restore to undo any recent changes on your computer.
5. Run Windows Update to update all your drivers.
6. Run a Disk Cleanup.
