Hub, switch, router or any networking device do not have any capabilities to erase the contents of a hard disk drive or any storage device you have.

You have mentioned that you are in the process of upgrading your OS or the operating system when the hub erased the hard drive. Again it is not true that the hard drive erased your hard drive. Since you are upgrading the operating system, there are possibilities that you have not upgraded or updated your operating system successfully. Sometimes improper updating will result lost of data in your hard disk drive. This is maybe real issue that’s why problem occurred. Try to repair your operating system using your original installation disk or boot in safe mode to fix the error.

One reason of this is when you are using downloaded software which is pirated. Some pirated software is embedded with virus. This may attack your computer without knowing that the virus is deleting some of your data in your hard disk drive.

Slave your hard disk drive to other computer and scan for virus infection and clean.

Upgrading the operating system can damage some of the data or erase some of the data that’s on your machine. This may be prevented though if you really did an actual ‘Upgrade’ and not a full system reinstallation. An upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 should be possible without altering your personal files on the same partition by choosing the Upgrade option during the Windows 7 installation process. If you are upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7, this will require a complete operating system reinstallation which means everything will be wiped out and a fresh operating system will be installed.  If your hard drive was erased, it was most likely due to the upgrade and not because of this software you call HUB.
