I got this error message when I try to update my MSN Messenger 6.2. It says “MSN Messenger could not complete setup: 1601 has occurred. Try downloading it from the website.” I get the same message after having done a couple or triple times of deleting and downloading them again from the website as what I have told to do. It is very irritating to have this error. Can anybody help me fix this? I got this error after using MSN for quite some time.

MSN Messenger Error 1601 when trying to update
Hi,
This issue may occur due to some reasons that are as follows:
1.Windows Installer is damaged or not correctly installed or you are running Windows in Safe Mode.
2. The System Account does not have full permissions on a registry key or folder that Windows installer is trying to access it. This may happen in NTFS system.
3. If the default authentication level is set to 'None', and the default Impersonation level is set to 'Anonymous' in the DCOM permissions.
This issue generally occurs after upgrading to Windows installer 2.0.
Resolutions:
1. In Windows XP, click Start, then Run, and type the following:
%systemroot%system32msiexec.exe /regserver
In Windows Vista or 7 or XP, you can press Windows key + 'R' key to get the Run.
2. Please Unregister and re-register the Windows Installer.
(i) Go to Start, click Run, type MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER, and then click OK. Even if you do this correctly, it may look like nothing occurs.
(ii) Again click Start, click Run, type MSIEXEC /REGSERVER, and then click OK. Even if you do this correctly, it may look like nothing occurs. After you run this command, the operation is complete.
(iii) Try your Windows Installer-based application(MSN Messenger) again.
3. Give Full Control permission to the SYSTEM account:-
–> Start Windows Explorer, right-click the Computer's root hard drive, and then click Properties.
–> Now, Click the Security tab, and then click Add.
–> In the Select Users, Computers, or Groups dialog box, click the SYSTEM account, click Add, and then click OK.
–> Under Allow, click to select the Full Control check box, and then click OK.
–> Click on the 'TEMP' folder and then verify that the SYSTEM account has full control.
4. You can fix the broken security key for the 'MsiServer service'.
For Windows 2000
–> Start the computer by using Windows 2000.
–> Click Start, then click Run, type regedit.exe, and after that rename the following key to Old_Security:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesMSIServerSecurity
–> Restart the computer(Mandatory).
–> Run Instmsiw.exe for installer 2.0 again; this corrects the broken security key for the MSI service.
I suggest you to try these methods to resolve the issue. I hope your issue will be resolved.
