Hi TechyV Friends!

Does anyone know a PDF word count tool? Is there a tool which count the number of words in PDF files? Can anyone please tell me where to find and get this tool? If you are a programmer, do you have a free application which has this functionality or do you know an open source application that counts words? Can you please help me? Any information will be of great help to me.

Thank you very much!

Hi Ammelia,

You can use online PDF word counters to get the job done. I can give you a few links to these online word counters.

Try the links below:

http://www.docwordcounter.com/  – (in this link, you can upload a PDF file of up to 15MB. Pretty useful if the PDF document you have is less than 15MB).

http://felix-cat.com/tools/wordcount/ – (this one accepts files of only up to 1MB. I'd go with the first link but if that site is down and your file is not more than 1MB, then you can choose this link).

When you go to these links, you just need to upload the PDF file that you want to have the words counted for.

You may also opt to download applications for this task.

Here are a couple of programs you may download and install:

https://www.anycount.com/pdf-format – (the program has a wider range of support for file formats. It can support the following: BMP, CHM, CSV, DOC, DOCX, GIF, HLP,HTM, HTML, JPG, MIF, ODP, ODS, ODT, PDF, PNG, PPS, PPT, PPTX, PUB, RAR, RTF,SDC, SDD, SDW, SLP, SXC, SXI, SXW, TXT, VSD, WPD, XLS, XLSX, XML, ZIP formats. This one has a 30-day free trial period. If you are satisfied with it, you may purchase the full version).

http://ginstrom.com/CountAnything/ – (The program has a limited number of file formats it can support. It can only support doc, rtf, xls, csv, ppt, odt, odp, ods, html, xml, txt, and pdf. It is free though so if its only a PDF file that you need to have the words counted, you can choose this one).

Hi Amelia,

There are free online PDF Word Count Tool out there. You can browse on the link below:

Free Online PDF Word Count Tool, in here you can just click Browse to look for the PDF file then enter the security code found below the page and then click count. You don’t have to worry about your files as this website does not store or analyze your PDF files they just do the word count then delete the file after.

OR

You can Open the document in Adobe Acrobat full version then save the document as RICH TEXT FORMAT (RTF). Open the RTF document in Microsoft Word then on the Menu bar choose TOOLS-WORD COUNT (OFFICE 2003) or from the ribbon choose REVIEW tab then click PROOFING then look for the WORD COUNT icon.
