Getting rid of Default Document Content Type from a document Set

When I attempted to get rid of the default document type from the allowed content types for a set of document, a message coming from the web page appears right before my eyes and it also says this type of content is in use.

Message from web page

Content Type in use

I don’t have an idea what this error was all about. I would appreciate it if somebody would be so nice to provide some ideas on how to repair this.

Hello AlisonPFleckenstein,

These types of errors are difficult to handle as there is no sure way to find out where the Content Type is being used. There is a possibility that you deleted the list where you used the Content Type and now you think that it is no more in use. But actually, the deleted list goes to site recycle bin and is still using the Content Type and that is why you are getting such error.

Remove any last trace of that list to remove this error. Delete it from Site Recycle Bin

and from the Site Collection Recycle Bin as well

Hi AlisonPFleckenstein,

Sharepoint can be quite tricky in a way that you need to make sure that you select the proper settings. This error you are getting can be fixed by following these steps:

1)      Look under the “Allowed Content Types” section for a category that says “Default content”.

2)      There is a “Delete” button on the right side of “Browse”. Click on “Delete”.

3)      This should now allow you to get rid of the default document type.

I hope this helps.
